Under current USA Volleyball (USAV) rules, there are specific conditions under which a player may legally enter or play the ball within the opponent’s space, whether above, below, or across the net.
Reaching Beyond the Net (Above the Net)
Players are generally restricted from contacting the ball in the opponent’s space, with key exceptions for blocking and follow-through actions.
Blocking Actions
- Reaching Beyond: A blocker may place their hands and arms beyond the net, provided the action does not interfere with the opponent’s play.
- Timing Requirement: A player may not touch the ball beyond the net before the opponent’s attack hit. The blocker must wait until the opponent has completed an attack hit. Simultaneous blocking contact is permitted.
- Bringing the Ball Back: If a player attempts to save an overpass and contacts the ball while reaching above the top of the net, the action may be ruled a Reaching Beyond the Net fault if the ball is contacted in the opponent’s space.
Attacking Actions
- Follow-Through: A player may pass their hand beyond the net after an attack hit, provided the ball contact occurred within the player’s own playing space.
- Attack-Hit Faults: It is illegal to complete an attack hit within the opponent’s space (Rule 13.3.1).
Penetration Under the Net (Floor Space)
Penetration into the opponent’s court and free zone is governed by rules related to safety and interference.
- General Rule: A player may penetrate into the opponent’s space under the net, provided the action does not interfere with the opponent’s play.
- Center Line Encroachment:
- A player must always have some part of the body either in contact with or directly above the center line
- A foot, feet, or hands may cross the line, provided they do not create a safety hazard or interfere with the opponent.
- Encroachment is legal if it does not create a safety hazard or interfere with play.
- Interference: Physical contact is not required for a move to be ruled interference or a safety hazard.
